I. The Story Behind the Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Double Fifth Festival or the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated annually on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. The festival holds various legends, among which the most widely known is the story of the ancient patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

Qu Yuan was a great poet and politician from the state of Chu. He was loyal to his country and people, but he was framed and excluded by his political rivals. In deep despair, Qu Yuan chose to throw himself into the river. To commemorate him, the local people rowed boats on the river to search for his body and threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish and shrimp from harming his body. This tradition gradually evolved into the Dragon Boat Festival, which has become an important traditional festival for the Chinese people.

In addition to commemorating Qu Yuan, the Dragon Boat Festival has many other customs. People eat zongzi (rice dumplings), race dragon boats, hang mugwort leaves, and drink realgar wine to pray for health, peace, and happiness.
